Could a field mustard plant grow on Mars? Could a pea plant? You might assume the answer is plainly no, yet a Dutch research team recently showed that seeds from many common plant species will readily sprout in soil built to mimic Martian conditions, so long as they are given water. In fact, a few species fared better in the mock Martian soil than in ordinary Earth soil: field mustard seeds sprouted at a 30 percent rate in the simulated Martian dirt, versus only 4 percent of those sown in soil from their own home planet.
